Everything you need to know about every ferry terminal in the USVI and BVI — location, parking, taxis, routes, and what to expect when you arrive.
Red Hook is the busiest and most important ferry terminal in St. Thomas. Located on the east end of the island, it's the main departure point for the frequent passenger ferry to St. John and the only departure point for BVI West End routes from the St. Thomas side. The car ferry also departs from Red Hook, from a separate terminal a short distance away on Government Road.
The Charlotte Amalie waterfront ferry dock — officially the Blyden Terminal — is the hub for international BVI routes and the closest ferry terminal to STT airport. It's the go-to terminal for cruise passengers heading to the BVI or St. John, and for anyone staying in or near downtown Charlotte Amalie. The terminal sits on the waterfront within easy walking distance of Main Street duty-free shopping.
Crown Bay Marina is the departure point for the Water Island ferry — a quick 10-minute hop to Water Island, the smallest and least-visited of the four main USVI islands. The marina also serves as one of St. Thomas's two cruise ship terminals and has a small collection of shops and restaurants dockside.
Cruz Bay is the only public ferry terminal on St. John and the gateway to everything the island has to offer. Located in the heart of Cruz Bay village, it's surrounded by restaurants, shops, the National Park Visitor Center, and taxi stands. All passenger ferries to and from St. John operate through this dock — as does the Lovango Resort ferry and BVI connections.
Road Town is the capital of the BVI and home to the main international ferry terminal on Tortola. All ferries from Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas arrive here. BVI Immigration and Customs are processed on-site. Road Town has a vibrant waterfront with restaurants, shops, and easy taxi connections across the island.
West End (Soper's Hole) is the ferry terminal on the western tip of Tortola and the arrival point for ferries from Red Hook, St. Thomas and Cruz Bay, St. John. It's also the departure point for New Horizon Ferry to Jost Van Dyke. The terminal sits within the picturesque Soper's Hole marina, surrounded by colourful shops and a waterfront bar.
Trellis Bay on Beef Island is one of the most convenient ferry terminals in the BVI — it's just 200 feet from the arrivals hall at Tortola's EIS Airport. Ferries to Scrub Island Resort depart from here, and the North Sound Express to Virgin Gorda North Sound also operates from Trellis Bay. A beachside terminal with an artsy, laid-back vibe.
Spanish Town is the main settlement on Virgin Gorda and the island's primary ferry terminal. It's the closest dock to The Baths — Virgin Gorda's famous giant boulder formations and tidal pools — making it the main arrival point for day-trippers. Taxis are available at the dock to take you across the island.
Gun Creek is the main dock on the North Sound side of Virgin Gorda, serving the resorts and destinations in the protected North Sound lagoon. From Gun Creek, small private ferries and resort boats connect guests to Saba Rock, the Bitter End Yacht Club area, Leverick Bay, and other North Sound properties. The North Sound Express ferry from Trellis Bay, Beef Island also terminates here.
Great Harbour is the main settlement and ferry dock on Jost Van Dyke. It's home to Foxy's Tamarind Bar — one of the most famous beach bars in the Caribbean — and just a short walk from the legendary White Bay and Soggy Dollar Bar. BVI customs and immigration are processed here on arrival.
Setting Point is the main dock on Anegada, a flat coral island famous for its lobster, pink flamingos, and stunning remote beaches. With limited ferry service (Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun via Smith's Ferry from Road Town), Anegada rewards those who plan carefully. A small airport (NGD) also serves the island for those who prefer to fly.
The passenger ferry to Cruz Bay, St. John departs from Red Hook Terminal on the east end of St. Thomas, approximately 25–30 minutes by taxi from STT airport. The car ferry also departs from Red Hook, from a separate terminal on Government Road. There is also a less frequent passenger service to St. John from Charlotte Amalie (downtown), operated by Boyson Inc.
Ferries to Road Town, Tortola depart from Charlotte Amalie (Blyden Terminal) on the downtown waterfront — approximately 10 minutes by taxi from STT airport. Ferries to West End, Tortola (Soper's Hole) depart from Red Hook on the east end of St. Thomas.
Charlotte Amalie (Blyden Terminal) is the closest ferry terminal to STT airport — approximately 10 minutes by taxi at a shared rate of $7 per person. Red Hook is approximately 25–30 minutes from the airport at $11 per person shared. Crown Bay Marina is about 15 minutes away.
Parking at Red Hook is limited and fills up quickly, especially on weekends and in high season. Paid parking is available near the terminal. Taking a taxi to Red Hook is recommended to avoid parking stress — especially if you're a day-tripper to St. John who won't need your car while there.
BVI customs and immigration are cleared at the BVI arrival terminal — Road Town, West End, Spanish Town, or Great Harbour depending on your destination. You do not clear customs at the USVI departure terminal. Have your passport and completed BVI eDeclare form ready to present on arrival in the BVI.
From Tortola's EIS Airport (Beef Island), Trellis Bay is just 200 feet away — walking distance. Road Town is approximately 30 minutes by taxi, West End is approximately 50 minutes by taxi. If you're heading to Scrub Island or Virgin Gorda North Sound, Trellis Bay is the most convenient connection.
