Before You Go
Ferry Travel Tips

What every visitor should know before boarding a ferry in the Virgin Islands.

🛂
Bring your passport for BVI trips
Traveling from the USVI to the BVI crosses an international border. A valid U.S. passport is required — even for U.S. citizens. A passport card works too. Plan for a BVI customs and immigration check upon arrival.
Arrive at least 30 minutes early
Ferries fill up fast, especially in high season (December through April). For BVI routes, arrive 45 minutes early to allow time for check-in and customs paperwork. Car ferry lines at Red Hook can be 2+ hours on busy weekends.
🚗
Rental cars cannot go on the car ferry
Nearly all rental car companies in the USVI prohibit their vehicles from being transported on the car ferry to St. John. Violations can result in significant fees. Rent a car on St. John instead — there are local options available in Cruz Bay.
💵
Bring cash for ferry tickets
Many ferry operators are cash-only or have limited card options at the terminal. U.S. dollars are used in both the USVI and BVI. ATMs are available near Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie. Typical fares range from $7 to $35 per person.
